Ultrasound - guided sclerotherapy using liquid sclerosant after preliminary saline flush
نویسندگان
چکیده
The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of liquid sclerosant with preliminary saline flush for ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy. Aethoxysklerol was used in varying concentrations ranging from 1.0% to 3.0% according to the volume required. Infusion of sclerosant was preceded by infusion of normal saline. Occlusion rates were determined by life-table analysis. Progressively lower concentrations were used as the study progressed. Life-table analysis showed significantly better results for tributaries compared to saphenous veins (92% vs 65%) and for dilute concentrations (≤1.5%) compared with stronger concentrations (>1.5%) (88% vs 66%). This observational study suggests that liquid sclerosant following a preliminary saline flush may give comparable results to those obtained with foam sclerotherapy. Confirmation would require a randomized controlled trial.

The concept of foam sclerotherapy was originally introduced by Orbach in 1944 who described the use of a froth made by shaking a syringe of sclerosant with air. He found that this was 10% more effective than the sclerosant used alone. Little was heard of this technique until Cabrera published an article in 1997 describing his experience in 261 limbs with long saphenous varices and 8 patients wi...
متن کاملCompression sclerotherapy for primary valvular insufficiency -from liquid to foam-.
The history of sclerotherapy of varicose veins of lower extremities dates back to 1840's. The use of stronger sclerosants thereafter led to serious complications, and the use of sclerotherapy decreased for varicose veins. However, sclerotherapy again became popular after introduction of safer sclerosant and compression sclerotherapy. After introduction of sclerosing foam in mid 1990's, many phl...

OBJECTIVE To evaluate the technical feasibility and the clinical effectiveness of sclerotherapy for the treatment of peritoneal inclusion cysts (PICs). MATERIALS AND METHODS Between June 1996 and February 2001, eight PICs in seven female patients aged 28-43 (mean, 36) years were instilled with sclerosant (povidone-iodine in three, ethanol in three, both povidone-iodine and ethanol in one). Al...
متن کاملMicrobubbles in macrocysts – Contrast-enhanced ultrasound assisted sclerosant therapy of a congenital macrocystic lymphangioma: a case report
BACKGROUND Congenital cystic lymphangiomas are benign malformations due to a developmental disorder of lymphatic vessels. Besides surgical excision, sclerosant therapy of these lesions by intracavitary injection of OK-432 (Picibanil®), a lyophilized mixture of group A Streptococcus pyogenes, is a common therapeutical option. For an appropriate application of OK-432, a detailed knowledge about t...

We describe a case of pulmonary embolism after sclerosant injection for bleeding oesophageal varices. The patient was managed successfully with enoxaparin. Systemic embolization after sclerotherapy is rare and depends upon a number of factors including the amount of sclerosant agent used. The incidence of this complication could be as high as 6% which warrants careful post procedure monitoring ...
